Japan Unveils Premium Train Upgrade for Travelers
Japan is adding a new luxury – Travel headlines this week highlight a blend of innovation and challenges as Japan introduces a new luxury rail option while grappling with rising temperatures and updated fees. The country, which has shattered tourism records annually since the pandemic, is now offering private compartments on its iconic Shinkansen high-speed trains. Starting in October, passengers traveling from Tokyo to destinations like Kyoto and Osaka can opt for “Supreme Class,” a premium service featuring lockable cabins with small sofas and adjustable lighting and climate controls.
Luna Azul Sleeper Service Launches Next Year
A new sleeper car, named “Luna Azul” (Spanish for “blue moon”), will debut on the Tohoku route, which connects Tokyo to northeastern prefectures such as Aomori and Akita. This service promises fully reclining seats and a unique experience for those seeking comfort during overnight journeys. However, Japan’s recent changes to its tourism policies may not please all travelers. The “sayonara tax,” an additional fee on airfare, will rise from ¥1,000 (approximately $6) to ¥3,000 ($18.50) on July 1. The government claims the revenue supports infrastructure improvements.
Global Heatwaves Impact Travel Plans
As the solstice passes, many regions are already experiencing summer’s peak, with record-breaking temperatures across Europe, Asia, and the U.S. disrupting travel schedules. Experts advise visitors to plan early: arriving at outdoor sites before the heat intensifies, taking regular breaks, and staying hydrated through water-rich foods like melons and grapes. While ice cream remains a summer staple, Turkey’s solution to melting is dondurma, a stretchy, chewy dessert that retains its shape. Palau, a secluded Pacific island nation near Taiwan and the Philippines, offers a different kind of allure. Its crater lake, home to rare, non-toxic jellyfish, has become a digital icon. The island also played a pivotal role in WWII, with Peleliu serving as a battleground during the Pacific Theater. Today, tourists can explore its caves and remnants of wartime equipment.
Busan’s 20th Anniversary Sand Art Festival
South Korea’s coastal city of Busan continues to captivate with its annual sand art exhibit on Haeundae Beach. This year, marking the 20th edition of the event, CNN featured a seasoned sculptor who shared insights into crafting complex designs. Meanwhile, Finland has launched a summer activity: a midnight sun treasure hunt that rewards participants with a $23,000 prize. Travelers are also being tested with a US citizenship quiz, measuring their knowledge of the nation’s history and culture.
“The midnight sun treasure hunt is a unique way to experience Finland’s natural wonders while testing your luck,” the event’s organizer explained.
