GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Enhanced Male Fertility, Study Suggests
Scientists say GLP 1s improved male – Men seeking to boost fertility might find new hope in GLP-1 medications, which are commonly used for diabetes and weight management. According to Dr. Pratibha Natesh, a consultant endocrinologist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire and honorary clinical lecturer at Warwick Medical School, participants aged 18 to 65 who underwent 24 weeks of treatment showed improved testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm morphology.
Male Infertility: A Common Challenge
Approximately 15% of couples in the U.S. face difficulty in conceiving, with over half of these cases involving male factors, as noted by Yale Medicine. Infertility is typically defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy after 12 months of consistent, unprotected intercourse. While GLP-1s show promise, Dr. Lidia Mínguez Alarcón, a reproductive epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, emphasized the need for more research before they are considered a primary treatment.
“The results suggest men using GLP-1s for weight loss or health conditions might benefit from considering their impact on fertility,” said Dr. Pratibha Natesh.
Weight Loss and Hormonal Health
Weight reduction associated with GLP-1 medications could enhance hormone regulation, including testosterone, as Natesh highlighted. If future studies confirm these findings, GLP-1s might offer an alternative to testosterone replacement therapy, which can hinder sperm production. Additionally, these drugs may reduce inflammation and metabolic strain, both of which can impair fertility.
“Some individuals struggle with weight loss due to hormonal imbalances, not necessarily because of excess weight,” remarked Dr. Amin Herati, urologist and director of male infertility at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Understanding Fertility Signs
Herati recommended consulting a reproductive urologist to determine whether weight loss or hormonal issues are the root cause of infertility. Sudden shifts in body fat, like those from bariatric surgery or GLP-1s, might signal the brain to delay reproduction, affecting fertility. He stressed the value of working with healthcare providers to guide healthy habits.
For those aiming to conceive, 12 months of failed attempts often indicate a need for evaluation. Symptoms such as reduced libido, fatigue, changes in body composition, and erectile difficulties are also key indicators. However, improving reproductive health extends beyond parenthood, as Minguez Alarcón noted. Strong semen quality and optimal testosterone levels are tied to better overall male wellness.
Healthy Habits for Fertility
Experts advise adopting lifestyle changes alongside medical treatment. Reducing ultraprocessed food intake, maintaining regular physical activity, limiting sedentary time, and avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals can all support fertility. Additionally, minimizing hot showers and hot tub use, along with prioritizing sleep and cutting back on smoking and alcohol, are recommended steps. Men planning to conceive should also communicate with their doctors to adjust treatment plans accordingly.
