The climbers, both identified by law enforcement as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, were taken into custody without confrontation. They now face several charges, including burglary, reckless endangerment, and criminal trespass, as the investigation into their method of accessing the restricted area continues.
“Stay where you are,” an officer says in a bodycam video recorded high above the city. “How are you doing? You can’t be up here,” the officer said. “I’m OK,” the woman responded. Her face was blurred by police in the video.
Details of the Climb
According to a law enforcement official, the pair accessed a restricted zone not typically open to the public. Two Emergency Service Unit officers climbed four ladders to reach them at the spire’s peak, ensuring their safe descent. Both remain in processing at a local precinct as of Wednesday.
Nikolau, 33, and Kuznetsov, 32, have been featured in Instagram posts showcasing their feats at various tall structures. Their account highlights a documentary titled “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” released in 2024, which describes them as “daredevil influencers” risking personal relationships and safety for their high-profile stunts.
Significance of the Incident
At the top of the building’s antenna, the couple unfurled a banner reading, “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace,” as captured in video footage. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe noted the stunt placed city officials and building owners in a “tough spot.”
“They are going to have to do whatever they can to see that these people are prosecuted for any appropriate charges because they cannot take the chance that others will see this and decide to also try it,” McCabe said.
Air traffic control audio revealed a moment between an NYPD helicopter pilot and a LaGuardia air traffic controller, with the pilot noting the couple’s flag and proposal. Elisa Morales, a Midtown Manhattan bystander, observed the event during her lunch break. “If it is a proposal, I don’t think that’s a proposal I would want, but I commend them for using something personal to try to make a more global impact,” she told CNN.
It remains unclear how the pair managed to ascend to the very top of the 1,454-foot landmark, though investigators are still working to uncover the details. Netflix, which produced the couple’s documentary, has yet to comment on the incident.
