Additionally, a 65-year-old woman—identified as the driver of a vehicle used to flee the scene—was also taken into custody. She is said to have close connections to the family.
“He had an appointment with various staff members regarding custody of his three-month-old daughter,” said police in their statement. “The daughter was placed in the custody of the youth welfare office. The mother is currently still subject to police measures.”

Local officials expressed relief that staff and children at nearby daycare and primary school facilities were unharmed. Carsten Brokelmann, a city councillor, praised the police for their swift response during the chaos and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier extended his condolences to the families affected, commending the emergency services and medical teams for their efforts. The police have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information about the shooting, warning that rumors could complicate the investigation.
Stade, located approximately 45 kilometers west of Hamburg, is a historic town with a population of around 50,000.
