The study, published in The Anatomical Record, was led by Dr. Georgios Georgalis of the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków. The team wanted to know whether the lure was supported by dramatically altered tail vertebrae.

Some snakes, including sand boas and rubber boas, have highly modified vertebrae near their tail tips. Yet the scans showed that the spider-tailed horned viper’s tail bones are largely ordinary for a viper.

“We wanted to investigate if the spider-tailed horn viper’s tail was similarly strange inside,” Georgalis said.

Instead, the spider illusion is created mainly by specialized, elongated scales and soft tissue. The finding shows why bones alone cannot always reveal how an animal looked or behaved: important features made from skin and scales are unlikely to survive in the fossil record.
