A father of three children, Hathalin was fatally shot in Umm al-Khair village, located in that same area.

According to Thursday’s indictment, Levi discharged his weapon toward a gathering of villagers, including children, after directing an excavator operator—who was a minor—to clear an unauthorized path across privately owned Palestinian territory. A Southern District Attorney’s Office spokesperson provided additional details:

At one point, the backhoe operator allegedly used the excavator’s digging tooth against one of the individuals standing in its path, striking him and causing injuries to his head and shoulder. Despite this, Levi allegedly signaled the operator to continue driving and to use the backhoe to break through another fence on the property.

Prosecutors described how tensions escalated between Levi and villagers who had assembled to halt the backhoe by hurling stones. Levi reportedly assaulted two Palestinians within that group before preparing his handgun. He then stepped away from the crowd and “fired a single shot parallel to the ground” in an area where children were also present.

Hathalin, who had been recording events from a courtyard approximately 20 meters (66 feet) distant, was struck and killed, the statement confirmed.

Levi established the Meitarim Farm outpost in the South Hebron Hills of the West Bank in 2021.
