The document, published on the occasion of the nation’s 250th anniversary, highlights the Domestic Policy Council’s claim that the Smithsonian has shifted its focus from historical education to extreme political activism.
During Trump’s second term, the Smithsonian—recognized as the world’s largest museum network—has faced pressure to eliminate what the White House terms “woke” ideology. Despite operating as a public-private trust and maintaining independence from executive agencies, the institution has been scrutinized for its portrayal of American history. The report emphasizes a lack of emphasis on the nation’s founders, inclusion of gender fluidity in educational content, and an alleged campaign against “whiteness” in historical context.
Report’s Key Allegations
The 162-page document follows an executive order issued in March 2025 titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” This directive aimed to counter what the White House calls “historical revisions” that present the country in a negative light. As a result, Trump’s advisors have directed efforts to identify and remove anti-American propaganda from cultural institutions, including the Smithsonian.
“For over 180 years, the Smithsonian has served the American public with nonpartisan and independent scholarship, and we remain committed to doing so,” said a Smithsonian spokesperson in response to the report.
Lonnie Bunch III, the Smithsonian’s secretary, noted in a May interview that the institution has preserved its autonomy while collaborating with the White House on internal reviews. Last August, the administration launched a comprehensive evaluation of exhibits and materials, urging alignment with its vision of celebrating American exceptionalism. Bunch, who became the first Black American to lead the Smithsonian, stated that his decisions for the “American Aspirations” exhibition—marking the 250th anniversary—were driven solely by scholarly principles.
Despite Bunch’s assertion of independence, the report accuses the museum’s leadership of intentionally deviating from an “America First” historical perspective. It claims the institution has “withheld and subverted” the nation’s central story, prioritizing progressive narratives over traditional ones. The White House has not yet disclosed specific plans for the report, but its focus on ideological reshaping of cultural institutions remains clear.
