Each participant wore a wrist-based device for seven days to track nighttime light exposure. Three years later, researchers used cardiovascular MRI scans to assess the structure and function of their hearts. This design allowed the team to examine whether sleep-time light exposure was connected with later physical changes in the organ.

Those exposed to more than 3 lux while asleep had thicker walls in the heart’s left ventricle than people who had no nighttime light exposure. Sleep duration appeared to explain part of the relationship. Qi said that sleeping for fewer than five or six hours accounted for between 24% and 49% of the observed impact on the heart. Nighttime illumination can shorten sleep, but it may also influence other processes associated with cardiovascular risk.

In an email, Qi noted that light at night may affect stress and biological changes, including blood pressure and heart rate. Those pathways could help explain why reduced sleep alone did not account for all of the association seen in the study.

Important limits of the research

The findings identify an association, rather than proving that bedroom light directly causes heart damage. Karl Lawrence, a lecturer at King’s College London’s Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, said the seven-day monitoring period may not fully reflect a person’s usual long-term exposure to light while sleeping.

He also pointed out that a sensor worn on the wrist does not precisely measure the light reaching a person’s eyes. Depending on sleeping position, bedding, device placement, and other factors, that measurement could either overstate or understate the relevant exposure.

Linking a week of light measurements to MRI results obtained three years later requires further study, Lawrence said. Larger and longer investigations will be needed to determine whether cutting nighttime light exposure can prevent cardiac remodeling or reduce future cardiovascular events.

Practical ways to make a bedroom darker

Sleep experts generally recommend keeping the bedroom as dark as possible, ideally at no more than 1 lux. Creating that environment does not necessarily require major changes. Heavy curtains, blackout shades, or blackout drapes can reduce outdoor light entering through windows.

Small gaps can also matter. Light-blocking foam, weatherproofing strips, and draft stoppers may help seal light around windows or under doors. Turning off unnecessary hallway lighting can further reduce the glow that reaches a bedroom.
