Thomas Duffy, president of the local police union, confirmed the victim's identity as Kurt Solomon, a 31-year veteran of the Worcester force.
"When you serve 31 years with an individual, you become more than coworkers. You become family, and today we lost a member of our family," Duffy told reporters on Tuesday. "Just a tremendous human being."
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. stated that Karen Solomon had been present at the house early Tuesday and that investigators sought to speak with her regarding what transpired.
First H.E.L.P. and Solomon's Advocacy Work
Karen Solomon co-founded First H.E.L.P., an organization devoted to supporting families of first responders who died by suicide, reducing stigma around mental-health care, and raising awareness of psychological challenges within law-enforcement and responder communities. The group issued a statement Tuesday evening.
"Our first concern is for the officer who lost his life, his family, his colleagues, and the Worcester law-enforcement community," the group said. "We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy."
