US Citizen Confirmed with Ebola in DR Congo

US citizen working in DR Congo - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday that a U.S. citizen employed by a humanitarian organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has contracted the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This marks the first confirmed case of Ebola in the country this year, according to the agency’s statement.

Global Efforts to Contain Spread

Authorities are coordinating with the patient’s employer, federal agencies, and DRC partners to trace potential exposures and curb the virus’s transmission. The CDC has not disclosed additional details about the individual’s condition or background.

Outbreak Context and Risk Assessment

As of late Friday, the DRC reported 1,830 confirmed Ebola cases, with 648 fatalities. The outbreak remains limited to rural regions of the DRC and Uganda. The CDC emphasized that the risk of the virus spreading to the U.S. is minimal, as no cases have been confirmed in the country.

“I had a high fever, and at times, I was too weak to walk on my own,” said Dr. Peter Stafford, a Christian missionary physician who contracted Ebola in May. His wife, Dr. Rebekah Stafford, described the emotional toll of watching global resources converge to support her husband while their Congolese friends faced less access to care.

The Staffords, who had lived in the DRC since 2021, were evacuated to Berlin, Germany, where Dr. Stafford received treatment. Their four children, all under seven, were under observation for symptoms during the ordeal. Rebekah Stafford noted the challenge of explaining to her kids that they couldn’t touch their father or enter his room.

Earlier this month, the first case of Ebola outside Africa was documented in France. A humanitarian worker, who had returned from a mission in the DRC, tested positive after showing symptoms consistent with the virus. The French Health Ministry confirmed this as the country’s first reported infection.
