Italian police divers find huge cannabis stash in sea cave off celebrity holiday island

Discovery in Chiaia di Luna

Italian police divers find huge cannabis - Italian police divers uncovered a substantial amount of hashish in a sea cave on Ponza, a renowned vacation spot favored by celebrities. Authorities reported seizing 330 blocks of the drug, totaling 40 kilograms, from the cave accessible only by water.

Collaborative Seizure Effort

The operation involved cave divers who navigated a tunnel to reach the concealed location. The 4th Naval Unit Squad of Gaeta Naval Operations partnered with the Guardia di Finanza financial police to execute the seizure. According to their statement, the drugs were intended for the summer tourist season, which is set to begin this weekend.

"The investigative activity, carried out through intelligence services, territorial observation, and monitoring of suspicious movements, led to the identification of a significant quantity of narcotics intended to fuel the illicit market during the summer season," the financial police said. "This is a significant achievement that demonstrates the professionalism and training of the personnel employed, capable of operating in particularly complex and difficult-to-access environments."

Mayor's Comments on Drug Activity

Ponza's mayor, Francesco Ambrosino, highlighted the island's vulnerability to drug trafficking. With only five police officers, primarily stationed to manage ferry traffic, the island has become a target for illicit activities. Ambrosino noted that authorities anticipate 15,000 visitors for the upcoming weekend, a period when drug dealing could pose a challenge.

“It’s clear that with these numbers, drug dealing can be a problem, but the seizures demonstrate that law enforcement is paying close attention. This is comforting,” Ambrosino stated to La Repubblica.

Historical Significance of Ponza

Ponza, the largest island in the Pontine archipelago, has a rich history dating back to the Neolithic era. It has also served as a place of exile, notably hosting Italy’s wartime fascist dictator Benito Mussolini in July 1943 after his overthrow. Mussolini spent just 10 days on the island, moving between locations to avoid German forces aiming to reinstate him as leader.
