Brendan Banfield Gets Life Sentence for Wife and Stranger Murders in Virginia

Brendan Banfield sentenced to life in prison - On Friday, Brendan Banfield, a 41-year-old man from Virginia, received a life prison sentence without the possibility of parole. The ruling came after he faced the families of his victims in court, where prosecutors detailed his involvement in a premeditated scheme with the family’s au pair. Banfield’s actions led to the deaths of his wife, Christine, and Joseph Ryan, a stranger lured into their home under false pretenses.

Judge Condemns the Crime as a Reflection of Evil

“The cruelty, calculation, and inhumanity in this case go beyond anger or impulse—it represents evil,” Judge Penney S. Azcarate declared during the sentencing. Her words underscored the severity of the verdict, which was handed down after a prolonged trial that revealed the dark alliance between Banfield and his au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães.

Affair and the Framing Scheme

Prosecutors argued that Banfield and Peres Magalhães conspired to eliminate Christine, framing Joseph Ryan for her murder. The plot began in February 2023, when the pair manipulated Ryan into entering their home under the guise of a romantic encounter. Banfield claimed he shot Ryan after discovering the man assaulting his wife, but his account clashed with Peres Magalhães’s testimony, which detailed her role in the crime.

Peres Magalhães, the 26-year-old Brazilian au pair, pleaded guilty in October 2024 to involuntary manslaughter. Her plea deal included cooperation with prosecutors, who used her testimony to build the case against Banfield. She had joined the Banfield family in October 2021 and developed a romantic relationship with the defendant.

Consecutive Sentences for Additional Offenses

Azcarate also mandated that Banfield serve consecutive prison terms for his convictions on a firearms offense and a child endangerment charge. The child endangerment accusation tied to his daughter, Valerie, who was present during the murders. The court’s decision highlighted the broader impact of Banfield’s actions on his family.

Victims’ Families Share Their Grief and Memories

“I’m not trying to diminish in any way what (Christine’s) life was. She truly was a caring mother, a caring wife, a loving nurse,” Banfield said during his statement before the sentence. “But I am not responsible for her death.”

Christine’s older sister, Danielle Hocker, addressed the court, reflecting on cherished moments shared with her “sissy.” “Since losing her, those same memories have changed. They’re no longer just joyful, but layered with grief, each one a reminder of both how much I had and how much was taken,” Hocker said.

“Brendan will remain known as an abusive father, the brutal murderer of his dedicated and compassionate, beautiful wife, and a narcissistic killer of an innocent man,” Deirdre Fisher, Ryan’s mother, stated. “My son’s legacy is one of selfless love, while Brendan’s is one of senseless evil.”

Sangeeta Ryan, the victim’s aunt, expressed her frustration with Banfield’s manipulation. “Today we take back Joe and Christine’s memory from the lies, from the manipulation, and from the man who thought he could control their story even after taking their lives,” she added.

Testimonies Highlight Christine’s Impact

Before the sentencing, a lifelong friend of Christine Banfield described her as a compassionate nurse and a steadfast advocate for victims of sexual assault. “She always carried everything with the most respect and, again, it was just all about helping people and being a person who somebody could go to and trust,” Lucille Priolo told CNN Trial Correspondent Jean Casarez.

“Through life, every chapter, we were together, we were friends, and she just always made sure she was that person who was at the door, even without being asked,” Priolo said. She noted that Christine, who grew up on Long Island, New York, was known for her kindness and unwavering support.

Christine’s family emphasized her role as a devoted mother, with Hocker vowing to preserve her legacy for Valerie, their surviving child. “I will tell Valerie how much she was loved by her mother, and I will forever carry both the grief of losing her too soon and the gratitude of having loved her for 37 years,” Hocker concluded.
