2 killed, multiple injured after vehicle drives onto field during soccer game at Wichita sports complex
Two Dead After Vehicle Enters Wichita Soccer Field During Saturday Game
Qwenews.com – A child and an adult were killed Saturday after a vehicle drove onto a soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, where families and young players had gathered for games. Several other people were injured in the incident, which occurred at about 3:25 p.m. local time.
Police took the driver into custody, and authorities said there was no continuing danger to the public connected to that person. Two juveniles were also inside the vehicle when it entered the complex, Wichita Police Department representative Aaron Moses said. The vehicle remained at the scene.
“This is a tragedy,” Moses said.
The names and ages of those who died had not been released Saturday as officials worked to notify their relatives. Moses said investigators were still determining which soccer clubs had been using the field at the time.
Families and players caught in a sudden emergency
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as a black pickup truck jumped a curb and traveled onto the playing area. One attendee said he was with family members when the vehicle entered the field. Two witnesses said they heard a loud sound around the time of the crash.
Many children and families were present when the vehicle came through the complex. Video from the area showed young players in red uniforms gathered near emergency vehicles and yellow police tape while first responders filled the site.
The sports field is enclosed by fencing and connects to a parking area through a concrete access route. Investigators had not determined how the vehicle got through the gate or how fast it was moving, Moses said. Those unanswered questions are central to the investigation as police reconstruct what happened in the moments before the vehicle reached the field.
The large emergency response closed off the area while officers and other personnel worked at the scene. Authorities asked members of the public to provide any photos or video recorded at the complex that could assist investigators.
Complex events halted as investigation continues
All activities at Stryker Sports Complex were canceled until further notice following the incident. In a statement, the facility asked the community to remember the people affected and their loved ones.
“We ask that you keep all individuals and families affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the statement said.
The complex serves a broad range of local soccer participants, with recreational and competitive youth leagues ranging from under-5 groups through high school, along with adult leagues. Its facilities include 11 outdoor turf fields and an indoor venue. For many families, a weekend competition at a youth sports complex is ordinarily a familiar community event, making the sudden violence especially distressing for children, parents, coaches and spectators.
Flag football state championship games planned at a nearby field were also suspended while police examined the area. The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced the halt as the investigation continued.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said she was heartbroken by the deaths and injuries and urged people to stay away from the area.
“My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved,” Wu said.
Key details remain under review
Authorities had not publicly identified a motive or explained what led to the vehicle entering the field. They also had not disclosed the condition of the injured people or the total number of victims receiving medical care. The driver’s identity and the identities of the two juveniles in the vehicle were not released.
Police planned another news conference Saturday evening to share additional information. Until investigators provide further findings, officials have asked the public to avoid speculation and to preserve any recordings from the complex that may show the vehicle, the gate area, the field, or the events immediately afterward.
The case raises immediate concerns for a facility designed around youth and adult recreation, but the available facts remain limited. Investigators will need to establish the vehicle’s path, the condition of access points, the speed involved and the sequence of events that resulted in people on the field being struck.
For families connected to the complex, the cancellations leave a practical disruption alongside a far more serious human loss. The focus Saturday remained on the victims, those injured, and the relatives and young players confronting an emergency in a place normally associated with organized sport and community activity.
