Conservative Leaders Embrace Unfounded Conspiracy Theories Involving McConnell and Graham

Prominent figures on the right leap - Key figures within the conservative and MAGA movements have taken the lead in circulating unfounded conspiracy theories regarding the disappearance of Sen. Mitch McConnell and the recent passing of Sen. Lindsey Graham. This trend highlights a growing tendency among Republican leaders to adopt such narratives without significant pushback, even as they originate from within the party’s own ranks.

Carlson's Outlandish Claims at Kirk's Memorial

At Charlie Kirk’s memorial service last year, Tucker Carlson appeared to align with emerging but unproven theories suggesting Israel was responsible for Kirk’s death. He drew a parallel between the activist’s passing and a hypothetical group in Jerusalem consuming hummus while allegedly plotting Jesus Christ’s demise. Despite the absurdity of the claim, prominent Republicans largely overlooked it, with only a few conservative critics raising objections.

“Carlson likened the conservative activist’s death to a group of individuals gathered in Jerusalem eating hummus, supposedly conspiring to assassinate Jesus Christ.”

When Carlson’s assertions became more explicit last month—suggesting Kirk “was most likely murdered for his evolving views on Israel”—the Republican Party remained silent. The claim, though lacking evidence, came from a thought leader close to Vice President JD Vance, further underscoring the party’s indifference.

Conspiracy Theories Spread Amid Lack of Transparency

Similarly, the GOP has ignored the overt promotion of these theories by popular podcaster Candace Owens. The narrative surrounding McConnell began with Laura Loomer, a White House ally, who asserted that the senator had been “brain dead” and “not coming back” after three weeks of absence without clear information from his office.

MAGA supporters amplified the narrative, with one claiming other senators were “ALL in on it together.” GOP Senator Mike Lee of Utah dismissed the claims, stating they “know nothing about his condition.” At one point, NewsNation posed a direct question to a House Republican about McConnell’s survival. Indiana Representative Marlin Stutzman replied, “I don’t know if he’s alive or has passed away.”

McConnell’s Office Faces Criticism for Delayed Disclosure

Some accountability for these theories may rest with McConnell’s office, which delayed releasing details about his health. On Sunday, following Graham’s death, the office finally disclosed that McConnell had fallen, briefly lost consciousness, and then developed pneumonia. A hospital photo showing him with his wife and a recent newspaper was shared, though Loomer dismissed it as altered without evidence.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune labeled the theories as “crazy speculation online” on Monday, yet he also acknowledged McConnell’s potential to curb such narratives. “Anything he can do to keep these conspiracy theories off the grid would be helpful,” Thune stated. Texas Senator John Cornyn later supported the push for clarity, saying, “I wish Sen. McConnell and his team had provided that information sooner. It would have answered many questions.”

Graham’s Death Sparks New Speculation

Graham’s passing late Saturday night quickly fueled fresh theories on the right, with some blaming a foreign government. Marc Thiessen, a conservative commentator, cited Vladimir Putin’s alleged history of eliminating rivals and argued that “not a conspiracy theory to suggest something else might be at play.” Others, like Kylie Jane Kremer, who organized rallies to aid Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, questioned whether Iran was involved, noting the regime’s criticism of Graham’s hawkish stance.

“Graham ‘dying out of the blue like this doesn’t make any sense at all,’” said Matt Van Swol, a MAGA activist. “Still others pointed the finger, as is often the case, at Israel.”

FBI Director Kash Patel’s social media post about Graham’s death added to the confusion, concluding with, “The FBI is assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available.” Many questioned why the FBI’s involvement was necessary if Graham’s death was unrelated to external forces.
