Qwenews.com – In a court filing submitted late Tuesday, attorneys representing the Kennedy Center informed a federal judge that the institution intends to place President Donald Trump’s name back onto the building’s exterior no earlier than September 8. The disclosure arrived amid a long-running legal dispute over the future of the landmark performing-arts venue and memorial dedicated to the late President John F. Kennedy.

The Planned Inscription and Broader Renaming

According to the filing, the center will install text beneath its existing sign reading that the venue was “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.” The board indicated that a further tribute referencing the president could appear later should the institution’s endowment reach the $100 million threshold. Separately, the center outlined plans to rename the physical parcel of land on which the building stands in Trump’s honor.

The move follows a board vote cast just last week to shutter the center for a multi-year renovation project and to affix the president’s name to the marble façade.

Legal Challenge by Rep. Joyce Beatty

US District Judge Christopher Cooper, an Obama-era appointee, had earlier ruled that the board broke the law when it paired Trump’s name with Kennedy’s on the building. Lawyers for Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, who initiated the suit, said they will petition Cooper once again to enjoin the newest change before it takes effect.

“This Court should not permit defendants to effectuate this latest gambit, in direct contravention of its earlier decision and in naked defiance of the law,” Beatty’s counsel told the judge, pressing him to rule on the legality of the reinstatement before September 8.

The attorneys also criticized the center for declining to commit unambiguously to halting the name change pending a judicial determination.

The Scaffolding and Tarp Dispute

Earlier this summer, workers on scaffolding erected outside the building removed the letters spelling “The Donald Trump and” from the façade after Cooper ordered that the venue bear only Kennedy’s name. Since that removal, heavy tarps have stayed in place, blocking public sightlines to the building’s official designation.

The center initially justified keeping the scaffolding up by citing damage to the section of structure where Trump’s name had previously appeared. In Tuesday’s filing, however, the institution described the scaffolding’s purpose as helping workers “investigate, and engineer structural repairs to the overhead soffit.”

Beatty’s lawyers dismissed that rationale, noting that “the soffits are some twenty feet or more above the scaffolding.” They asked Cooper to compel the center to explain why the tarp should not be removed in the coming weeks.

“Defendants imply that they will erect more scaffolding around the rest of the Center, presumably to examine other portions of the roof,” the filing read. “But defendants tellingly have not done so for months, leaving only the Center’s iconic name obscured – a strong indication that this structure has nothing to do with the roof and is, instead, meant to defy a return to the status quo.”

Broader Context

The suit is one of several challenges questioning the legality of Trump’s efforts to imprint his legacy on historic sites in and around Washington, DC, through renovations and new memorials. The center’s board, populated largely by individuals selected by the president, has pushed ahead with the closure-and-renovation plan. Critics argue the project was conceived less to improve the building than to sidestep declining ticket sales and underwhelming programming.
