With a sticker price of $28,350, the automaker aims to capture a segment that currently lacks options in the United States. This vehicle must accommodate a family of five while remaining compact.

The financial stakes are considerable. While launching a new model typically requires about $2 billion, the engineering required to deliver an affordable electric truck has pushed costs significantly higher. Including future derivatives, Ford has invested approximately $5 billion into the project.

“Despite the small footprint of the vehicle, the implications are huge,” said Ivan Drury, Edmunds’ director of consumer insights.

Learning from Past Mistakes

Ford previously attempted to mainstream electric trucks with the F-150 Lightning. Initially priced at $40,000 in early 2022, the cost climbed to nearly $60,000 by 2023. Potential customers hesitated due to skepticism regarding both the technology and the rising expense. Consequently, sales peaked at 33,510 units in 2024 before production ceased in December 2025.

Economic headwinds have intensified since then. Last October, the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers removed a $7,500 federal tax incentive for electric vehicles. According to Cox Automotive, the average electric car sold for $56,238 in June, which is almost $7,000 above the general market average.

Nevertheless, demand remains resilient. Domestic electric vehicle sales increased by 15 percent between the first and second quarters of this year.

The Maverick Blueprint

Industry experts suggest the Fathom should look to the Ford Maverick rather than the Lightning for guidance. Introduced in 2019, the Maverick offers gasoline and hybrid versions starting at $28,145. That figure is only $200 less than the upcoming electric model.

Although 155,000 annual sales seem modest compared to the 800,000 F-Series trucks sold in 2025, the Maverick consistently sells out its production capacity. Drury described it as potentially the most successful vehicle launch of the last ten years, noting it exceeded all projections.

“It’s a big bet for Ford, for sure,” stated Emma Bergg, a Ford spokesperson.
