Meanwhile, Evers and other party leaders have attempted to rally behind David Crowley, the 40-year-old Milwaukee County executive. Crowley initially exited the contest in early July before re-entering ten days later. Even Crowley’s backers concede that Hong maintains her position as the leading candidate.

Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson, who backs Crowley, offered perspective on the race’s significance:

Tiffany Launches Early Attack on Hong’s Progressive Credentials

According to a CNN poll, approximately one-third of Democrats now identify as democratic socialists. Tiffany has seized on this connection, beginning his campaign against Hong before the primary even concludes. He has linked her to the Democratic Socialists of America’s platform, alleging she supports eliminating prisons, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and even the U.S. Senate.

The Republican representative has also emphasized Hong’s past calls for police defunding—an issue expected to dominate Republican advertising throughout the fall campaign.

Hong’s background offers a different narrative than many progressive politicians. She rose from entry-level kitchen positions to become a prominent chef and co-owner of a restaurant. In response to criticism, she has attempted to separate herself from certain elements of the DSA platform.

“I do not support the full platform of the national DSA and I am not endorsed by DSA National,” Hong stated during a recent debate. She further clarified that she is “not here to govern by slogan” and emphasized that the governor’s office lacks the authority to defund police departments.

Clarifying Her Position on Policing

Despite these statements, Hong faced questions during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on Friday. When pressed repeatedly about whether her views on police defunding had evolved, she did not provide a direct answer.

Hong countered that Republicans controlling the Wisconsin legislature are responsible for reducing police funding through cuts to local government allocations.

“People can evolve,” Hong said. “I am going to be a sensible and practical governor that is going to make sure that public safety is a priority.”

A Movement at a Crossroads

The Wisconsin election arrives as the Democratic Party confronts a critical juncture. Party members are watching not only this gubernatorial race but also a Senate primary in Michigan and other key contests as indicators of trends that could shape the 2028 presidential primary, which is expected to be wide open.

“She has brought a coalition into the Democratic Party that otherwise had been shut out and told, ‘You don’t belong within this.’ And they’ve been showing up continuously. They definitely look different and act different than folks who have been around for a really long time, and frankly they should, because the political system has not worked for them.”
