Mass Shooting in Johannesburg Claims 12 Lives
Multiple attackers kill 12 in late – A group of assailants executed a late-night attack in Johannesburg, resulting in 12 fatalities and nine injuries, as reported by police on Wednesday. The incident, which occurred in the Cleveland suburb, marked another surge in violence targeting the city’s residents. Authorities suspect over 10 individuals were transported in a minibus to the area before launching a coordinated assault.
The Cleveland neighborhood, known for its ties to illicit mining operations, has seen repeated acts of aggression in recent months. This latest attack followed two high-profile shootings in December that left more than 20 people dead. In one of those incidents, multiple shooters were involved, underscoring the escalating threat.
Investigation and Suspect Pursuit
Police stated that the attackers “traversed the area, firing indiscriminately at civilians across multiple points before escaping in the same vehicle.” The victims included nine men and three women, with eleven confirmed dead at the scene and a twelfth succumbing to injuries later. Detectives from provincial and district units, alongside crime analysts and forensic teams, are now working to trace the perpetrators.
“We are still investigating, but what we have seen here is a criminal act,” said Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni. He added that crime intelligence officials had been dispatched to the area but declined to connect the attack to illegal mining until evidence was conclusive.
The motive behind the shooting remains under scrutiny. While illegal mining gangs are frequently cited as potential culprits, police have not yet established a direct link. CNN’s David McKenzie provided a firsthand account of the city’s rising crime rates, accompanying private security teams as they responded to hijackings and heists that have reached unprecedented levels in South Africa.
Informal settlements, typically composed of temporary shelters and makeshift structures, have become focal points for such attacks. Officials emphasize the need for continued vigilance as they seek to uncover the full scope of the perpetrators’ plans and prevent future incidents.
